I was inspired by Trevor Paglen’s Geographies of Time when creating my 8 page publication layout for UNI. The collection of photographs carried by satellite EchoStar XVI is described by Trevor Paglen as having the capacity to “transcend the Anthropocene and to transcend deep time itself.” I reflected this idea by bypassing the types of margins one might typically expect of a grid as well as by amplifying negative versus positive space. I wanted the text and images to appear somewhat uncontained as if they could continue right off the page. I used negative space in this layout to represent the vast expanse of outer space while simultaneously allowing the text and images to lock together. This creates a series of implied lines that mimic Paglan’s ideas of the Anthropocene, or how we move and shape the Earth.
