Type as Image: The Birds

I chose to create a design based around Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds for my film-inspired broadside. This thriller/horror film inspired me to pull from and incorporate menacing and ominous themes. The car as background imagery is a direct reference to the film’s iconic car scene. I then physically scratched the words “THE BIRDS” into the image with a blade to represent the birds’ claws as well as to signify their aggression in the film. The remainder of the type is an excerpt from the script that I layered on top of the car in such a way that all of the words are stacked on top of each other, amplifying a feeling of being unable to escape. My accompanying animation takes a similar approach while also featuring an impending swarm of birds and ending with the same scratchy title from the broadside.
